Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club President Ray Grech and Challenge Marathon (Challenge) Founder Barry Whitmore earlier on this week signed the agreement, wherein the Challenge has now been officially handed over to the Club.
The Malta International Challenge Marathon was the brainchild of Barry Whitmore, a marathon runner with several international marathons under his belt. The first edition of the Challenge took place in 1991.
The Malta International Challenge Marathon, has been Malta’s only multi-day race, a staple event on the Maltese athletic calendar, attracting locals and foreigners alike.
Spread over a period of three consecutive days, athletes cover a distance that measures exactly 42.195km.
Club President Ray Grech emphasized such a Race will continue to enhance the Club’s international and local race profile.
This agreement, follows the Club’s involvement in the recently held SportMalta Charity Marathon, demonstrates the Club’s strength at its capacity to organise any kind of event, irrespective of its size.
The Malta International Challenge Marathon will continue to take place in the last weekend of November, as has been the tradition since its inception.
Although relinquishing his ownership of this race, Whitmore expressed his satisfaction at passing on his legacy to such a well respected and long established Club.
This agreement is part of a number of initiatives that the Club has in the pipeline and will be announced shortly.
Malta International Challenge Marathon Race is an AIMS Certified event and Registrations will be open shortly.
