About Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club
Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club has evolved into Malta ’s leading multi-sports Club. Founded in August, 1975, and the nearly five decades that followed saw a period of continuous activity, which saw the Club being represented in various sporting disciplines, including football, darts, table-tennis, athletics, cycling, swimming and triathlon.
Club Administration
The Club is administered by an executive Committee which is made up of the President – Raymond Grech, Secretary General – Euchar Camilleri and Treasurer – Paul Ciantar. An Administrative Team, consisting of the Secretary General, Joseph Farrugia, Paul Ciantar and Maria Vella – Galea run the Club on its day to day matters.
The Club’s Administration has a long history of occupying administrative posts in various sporting entities and associations, which give the Club its extensive experience in events organisation and race management. The Club is an organising entity in its own right, hosting a full programme of sporting events, primarily in the summer months.
Athletics
The Club hosts the summer 5k Road Running Series in Mtarfa. This is a three race series which has welcomed hundred of athletes at all levels. The Club hosts its annual December 13th Fleur-de-Lys 10k and 5k Races and in recent years took over the organisation of the Malta International Challenge Marathon, the only Marathon spread over three days in the last weekend of November.
Cycling
Although one of the smallest sections of the Club, the Club cyclists have been regularly competing in national competitions as well as the International Tour Ta’ Malta. Club cyclists regularly take on podium positions in the various age group categories. The Club annually hosts a Criterium Race or Individual Time Trial in Fleur-de-Lys, under the auspices of the Malta Cycling Federation.
Football
The Club owes its existence to this sport, when it was set up in 1975. It gave birth to the Birkirkara Football Youth Nursery in 1981, which was eventually transferred to Birkirkara Football Club in 1983. The Club fielded the first ever football team to play in the national Football Stadium in Ta’ Qali for the first ever competitive football match held there on Sunday 3 May 1981 (Malta Football Federation League Final vs. Valletta Vanguards). Currently the team competes in the Inter Amateur Soccer Competition and the Malta Amateur Football Association.
Swimming
Open Water Swimming put the Club firmly on the local sporting scene. The Club is the only entity that hosts such competitions. In the past, Birkirkara St. Joseph swimming teams swam around the whole Maltese archipelago (twice around Malta but excluding the island of Filfla due to Maltese Maritime Law). The Club hosts the annual Open Water Swimming Championships, which consist of five 2km swims and one 4km swim. These swims also act as qualifying events for those swimmers planning on taking part in the Malta – Gozo – Malta and Gozo – Malta Swimming competitions.
Triathlon
Triathlon is what put Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club on the national sporting scene map. What was a little known sport evolved in a highly popular discipline that takes the Club back to 1994, when it engaged the services of a professional British triathlon coach, embarking on a programme which lead Club to win the National Triathlon Championship consecutively for over a decade, producing Malta ’s top triathletes in the process. Products of the Club include triathletes such as Dermot Galea, ten time national champion and the first Maltese triathlete to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i. The Club’s colours were once again represented in Hawai’i, when club triathlete Rudolph Agius gained this coveted qualification twice.
All events as hosted under the auspices of the relative National Federations, with whom the Club has very good relations and works with on a number of projects. The Club has also organised a number of sporting events in conjunction with Local Councils and other sporting entities.
Membership
Although Club members have brought honour to the Club not only with their results but also though the highest awards in local sports (Sportivi Nazzjonali), the Club does not only cater for top or elite athletes. Within its ranks there is a variety of members having different abilities and coming from all walks of life. These members have represented the Club in extreme sports, achieving excellent results (Long Distance Triathlons, Marathons, Malta-Gozo-Malta swims, long distance swims, etc.)
