Evergreen athletes Mario Grech and Carmen Hili took the win in the first of the three-part BSJ 5k Road Running Series for 2023.
Hosted in collaboration with Corsa, the BSJ 5km Road Running Series for 2023 kicked off in Mtarfa earlier on last week. Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club who have been hosting this annual road running race for nearly two decades introduced a slightly changed race course which saw the start and finish on the newly resurfaced Mtarfa bridge.
Dominating the males’ category were Mario Grech, Andrew Grech and Matthew Xuereb who were hot on each others’ heels for most of the race. Onto the second lap, Grech extended his gap away from Andrew Grech and Xuereb and a determined push in the final throes of the race saw him claim the podium. Grech and Xuereb followed in second and third place respectively.
In the females category veteran Carmen Hili showed her mettle to lead the way throughout, keeping a comfortable gap between her and second placed Jade Mallia. In third place was Emma Fenech.
Club President Ray Grech, on presenting the top three males and females with medals, remarked that the slight change in course made for a more spectacular start and finish.
The second race of the series is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 11th July at 1930hrs. Online registration is open and available on https://bsj.mt/event/2023-bsj-running-series-race-2/
