Dylan Cachia and Sasha Gatt continued to assert their prowess in Open Water Swimming as they once again took top spots in the third race of the Garmin BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships in Salina, earlier on this week.
Hosted by Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club, under the auspices of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, the two kilometre race was held under more challenging conditions than usual, which saw a light swell and stronger than usual currents. This resulted in many swimmers registered slower times than normal.
Cachia continued his unbeaten run for the Championships as he led the way throughout with a comfortable gap ahead of second swimmer to finish Sasha Gatt. Gatt, who was taking part in her second open water swim managed to shave off 21 seconds off her previous time and was the second swimmer out of the water. Third out of the water was Luca Vella who swam for a good part of the race with Gatt, however Gatt eventually pushed forward to move away from Vella.
The third male to take the podium was Tristan Micallef, whilst the female swimmers completing the podium where Martina Micallef and Roanna Farrugia. Micallef pipped Farrugia to second place for the first time this year.
Medals to the top three Male and Female swimmers were presented at the end of the race by Club President Ray Grech.
