SWIMMING | Dylan Cachia, Sasha Gatt win second Garmin BSJ Open Water Swimming Championship Race

Dylan Cachia continued his dominant performance in the second race of the Garmin BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships, whilst Olympian Sasha Gatt made her Open Water Swimming debut, taking the winners’ podium in the process.

There was little doubt that Cachia would not taken a clear lead in the second race of the series. Cachia was well ahead of the rest of the pack for the duration of the race, however a notable performance was registered by second place Luca Vella who shaved off nearly two minutes from his previous race.  In third place Nathan Cachia produced a fine showing to take third place, just a few seconds behind Vella. Cachia started in the last wave since this was his first race of the series, nevertheless edged his way towards the front of the group and joined his elder sibling on the podium.

In the females’ category, one of Malta’s youngest Olympians Sasha Gatt, made her open water debut.  Gatt, who like Nathan Cachia started off in the last wave asserted her position to overtake the winner of the first race Roanna Farrugia who came in second place. In third pace was Martina Micallef. In the second race, both Farrugia and Micallef improved on their previous timings.

The Garmin BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships, hosted by Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club under the auspices of the Aquatic Sports Asssociation of Malta, serve as qualifying events for possible participation in the Garmin Malta – Gozo – Malta and Garmin Gozo Malta Open Water Competitions.

The next race will take place in Salina on the 6th July at 1830hrs. Registration is open online via this link – https://bsj.mt/event/2022-bsj-open-water-swimming-championships-race-3/
