Swimming

The aim of the Club’s Swimming Section is to promote the discipline of Open Water Swimming, irrespective of the distance which starts from short swims to Long Distance Swimming and/ or Marathon Swimming.

 

The Swimming Section of the Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club is a very active one with all year round sessions held both at the National Swimming Pool as well as in the open sea.

Training, under the guidance of the Club’s Head Coach Isabelle Zarb is given every Saturday morning. Groups are divided into three groups – Beginners, Improvers and Advanced, are coached at different times. In addition, Club members who are also members of the National Pool, are given two to three weekly session programmes to continue  with their training in their own time. 

The annual open water swimming events the Club hosts are:-

The Birkirkara St. Joseph Open Water Swimming Championships held between June and August.

The Gozo-Malta Open Water Swimming Competition (5.5K) and the Malta-Gozo-Malta Open Water Swimming Competition (11K) which as of 2023 takes place in September.

Isabelle Zarb is the Club’s Head Coach is a qualified Level 2 ASA UK coach.  Apart from coaching, Isabelle has represented the Club in various international long distance swimming events.
