Luca Vella, Amy Micallef win 2023 Titles
Birkirkara St Joseph Sports hosted the final race of the 2023 Garmin BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships on Wednesday 23rd August in its home base in Salina.
The final race of the championship consisted of a 4km course. Sea conditions were far less challenging from previous races, however the length of the course was double the distance normally covered in these championships.
There were no surprises in the overall results with Luca Vella and Amy Micallef taking the championship crown home.
Luca Vella continued to show his prowess leading the way from the very start. Nonetheless, second placed Sam Camilleri was not very far behind. Camilleri also gave a good account of himself throughout the Championships, regularly featuring on the winners’ podium. In third place was Gabriel Camilleri. Joining Vella and Camilleri in the overall classification podium was Mark Sponneck who finished in third place.
“The Club is thoroughly satisfied with the outcome of this year’s Championships. It is significant that the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta continues to support these Championships, recognising them as official National Championships for Open Water Swimming” commented Euchar Camilleri, Secretary General, Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club. “This year also saw the Club host races in various locations around Malta, which was well received by swimmers”.
Trophies and medals to the winners of the race and the overall classification were presented immediately after the race by the Club President Mr Ray Grech, who apart from congratulating the winners also expressed his gratitude towards Garmin Malta for their ongoing support as well as the various local councils where the swimming events took place and who offered their support.
The Club will now focus its attention towards the Garmin Malta – Gozo – Malta and Garmin Gozo – Malta Channel swims, which will take place on Saturday 16th September.
