Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club will be hosting the Sprint Triathlon National Championships in Salina on Sunday 11th June.
The Race will be the third triathlon hosted by the Club this year, the most recent being the the second race of the BSJ Go&Fun Triathlon Series consisting of an Olympic Distance Triathlon in Salina in May.
The Olympic distance triathlon saw athletes compete in a 1500m swim in challenging sea conditions due to the strong winds experienced in the previous days, a 40km cycle and a 10km run along the Salina coast road.
Whilst race favourites, BSJ club triathletes Keith Galea and Krista Kuusijarvi prevailed on the day, some surprises were in store on the day, the first being in the swim, when Nicholas Sammut (Agones SFC) who was the first out of the water well ahead of race favourite Keith Galea. Catching up on the bike Galea lead the way but attempts were made to challenge him particularly on the run, when Roberto Briffa who registered the fastest bike split of the day, exited transition behind Galea. Nevertheless, with Galea firmly ahead with a comfortable gap, the race was on for the remaining podium places which were taken up by Josef Azzopardi (TriGozo) and Steve Ritchie (Bkara SJ), who were engaged in a battle of wits for most of the race. Less surprises were in store for the women’s race with Kuusijarvi leading the way throughout ahead of second placed Clara Attard Formosa (St. Patrick’s) and third placed Denise Cortis (Agones SFC).
Sunday’s National Championships will be held under the auspices of the Malta Triathlon Federation. All Federation registered athletes will be eligible to compete for overall and age group trophies. However the Club will accept non-Federation registered triathletes who wish to take part in the Sprint Distance (750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km) on the day.
Registrations will be accepted until Thursday 8th June and can be done online https://bsj.mt/event/2023-bsj-sprint-triathlon-race-2/
